Investing In Better Construction

When I started working on renovating my home, I knew that I needed to do something in order to make sure things were done according to code. Even though I had previously committed myself to doing all of the work on my own, I knew that it wasn't in my home's best interest to try my hand at things I wasn't familiar with. I began searching for professional contractors, and I was able to find an expert that really understood the intricacies of well-done construction. He worked hard to make my home beautiful, safe, and valuable. This blog is here to help people to invest in better construction.

Ways To Make Textured Walls Look Nicer

Textured walls can be nice to have, but they can also be a nightmare if you do not like them. If you have textured walls in your house that look dull, drab, and dirty, you could always paint over them, or you could remove or cover the walls. There are ways to improve the looks of textured walls, and here are some of the options you have.

Paint Over Them

Painting over textured walls is not impossible and can make a huge difference with the way they look. If you want to do this, you should be prepared for the task, though. It is harder to paint over textured walls compared to smooth walls, and you will need to gather the right supplies:

  • Primer – Painting over any wall is easier to do if you primer the walls first.
  • Paint – To cover textured walls, you will need a lot of paint; you should buy approximately twice as much paint as you would need to paint over smooth walls.
  • Roller naps – A roller nap is what you will place on a paint roller to put the paint on your walls, and using a thick, 3/4-inch roller nap is the best option for textured walls because thick types like this hold more paint and make it easier to cover walls that have texture.

You may also want to have painter's tape handy, paint pans, and drop clothes. Once you are ready, you can begin placing the primer on the walls. Be sure to place thick coats on your nap, because textured walls can be hard to cover. You should also realize you may need at least two coats of paint on the walls to fully fill in all the small crevices.

Remove The Texture

If you are tired of the textured look and want smooth walls, you could always scrape the texture off. This is a big and messy job, but it will make your walls look better. The easiest way to do this is to spray the walls with water from a water bottle. Next, take a scraping tool and begin scraping. If you place drop cloths down first, the mess will be easier to clean up.

This job will create a lot of dust and debris, and you may want to have a shop vac ready to use when you are finished. You may also want to cover any furniture in the room with cloths to avoid dropping the wet texture on your things.

When you are finished, you may need to skim coat the walls to even out any imperfections. After that dries, your walls can be painted any way you would like.

Cover The Texture

The third option you could choose from is covering your textured walls. If you do not like the way they look and do not want to scrape the texture off, you could consider covering them. One material you could use for this is paneling. Paneling comes in many colors and varieties and can be placed right over texture. Another option is to cover the walls with new drywall. You can purchase drywall that is thinner than the standard type, and this could be placed directly over the textured walls.

If you have texture on your ceiling, you could purchase ceiling tiles to install over the texture. These also come in many colors and types, and they can make a room look totally different after they are installed.

If you are not up to handling this job in any of these ways, you could always hire a professional to do the work for you. To learn more, contact a company that offers interior painting services in your area, such as Carvey Painting & Decorating Inc.
